Hello! I’ve recently joined the Manchester Cares team as the new Programme Coordinator for Social Clubs and it’s been a really exciting month full of learning and meeting new people. I wanted to share some highlights, and explain why I'm so happy to be joining Manchester Cares.
I am a Mancunian born and bred, and something that we pride ourselves on is the character of our people. We are a city of big personalities with plenty of stories to share! However, with growing disparities between how much time we spend ‘communicating’ online vs time spent around people, we can easily become lonely and disconnected - no matter our age.
I have experienced this first hand during my time living away at University. In the absence of my usual support network, I had times feeling lonely, isolated, and not enjoying life as much as usual. This is a situation that all too many of us - no matter our age - find ourselves in. In a world and a city that is changing so fast, it can be hard to stay truly connected. This is why I'm so excited to be joining an organisation dedicated to bringing people together for a sense of belonging
In my first week, I saw the impact this sense of community and belonging can have. I joined a wonderful group of older neighbours in Hulme on their filmmaking project, a series of workshops forming part of the Social Clubs programme. The group had such creative responses and vitality; Rosetta (66) told me how activities like this are allowing her to explore her identity and aspects of her personality in a way she hasn't done before.
In the weeks since then, I’ve heard so many stories of new friendships that have been made through Manchester Cares and witnessed the happiness that can come from this.
As Programme Coordinator, I’ll be designing and delivering our exciting and varied programme of Social Clubs. I'll be looking for organisations to collaborate with to bring together older and younger neighbours across the city; working to make our activities as engaging and accessible as possible; and getting to know everyone in our network as well as making new connections daily to make the social clubs as good as they can be for you - the people of Manchester!
