Meet Naomi, Programmes Coordinator

While the days may be getting colder and darker, I am feeling warmed and inspired by the welcome I have received as I settle into the role of Programmes Coordinator at Manchester Cares.

Looking back over my first month, I have had the pleasure of joining neighbours on the dance floor at Desert Island Discs Social Club and Manchester Cares’ 4th Birthday Party. I’ve been out and about getting to know older neighbours in the community with Love Your Neighbour Coordinators Izzy and Vicky, and meeting budding new volunteers with Amy at the inductions.

It is immediately obvious to me that Manchester Cares really makes a difference to younger and older neighbours’ lives. Some neighbours have been involved for years, whilst others like me have only just found a home in Manchester Cares.

The Social Clubs are lots of fun offering a real variety of activities, and Love Your Neighbour matches unquestionably lead to meaningful and mutual friendships. There really is a lot on offer, and I’m blown away by the obvious enthusiasm and ambition of both staff and neighbours.

Growing up in the Midlands, I was always known as the chatterbox, so it has come as no surprise that listening to one another’s stories and perspectives is hugely important to me in the work that I do. I firmly believe that conversation can save lives so The Cares Family, felt like an obvious fit!

Before joining the Manchester Cares' team, I’ve largely worked in museums, art galleries and archives, working with communities to use history to spark conversation reflecting on Manchester’s past and present. These experiences have shown me the value of listening, taking time to ask questions, meeting people outside of your friendship bubble, and for creating and protecting spaces where people can come together to do exactly that.

Outside of work, music & movement definitely make me happy! I’m always dancing around my kitchen, and I love to keep active by taking dance classes, swimming, and hiking in the Peaks.

You’ll see me working across Manchester Cares main programmes, helping out at Social Clubs, spreading word about the charity and delivering volunteer sessions, as well as supporting Love Your Neighbour. I cannot wait to meet more neighbours; to watch more friendships blossom; and to support our community to try new experiences in this vibrant city I proudly call home!
