An ode to new friends: Charles reflects on his first social club

Please note: this post is 84 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

Manchester Cares’ social clubs are vibrant and varied group activities that provide older and younger neighbours with the space to share time, laughter and new experiences.

Older neighbour Charles, aged 66, has now been along to two Manchester Cares social clubs. At his first, Desert Island Discs, younger and older neighbours shared songs and anecdotes that made them reminisce of first loves. Having enjoyed it so much, he came along to an evening of Board Games, Drinks and Nibbles the following week, where he got to know younger neighbours Becky and Bethan over his first ever game of Scrabble – which he won!

A highlight of the evening was Charles sharing his piece of writing (below). It was a ‘stoem’ Charles explained – a term he has invented that is a poem and a short story combined!

Desert Island Discs and Other Games

On Monday the fifth of February in Ancoats at Victoria Square, Desert Island Discs were played as the audience were asked to share

Share what? I hear you say, well ‘First Love’ was the theme, could it be our favourite song, or someone in a dream

Needless to say, a dream it was not, as eighteen people chose a song, which to everyone meant a lot

As luck would have it, my song choice was first on the playlist and it was Dancing in the Streets by Martha and the Vandellas, which brought back memories of me working in holiday camps during the 1970’s and meeting the love of my life. Other songs chosen meant a lot to everyone who attended this fabulous night – too many to mention but I will name a few to see if you remember them too... Bridge Over Troubled Water, Wind Beneath My Wings, Love Letters in the Sand, Secret Love, Running Scared

Today we are here at MadLab, hoping to play some board games, if this is every bit as good as last week, then I’m sure glad that I came

So what sorts of board games are we playing? Snakes & Ladders or Drafts I can do, but anything with questions and answers, I’m rubbish, believe me it’s true

Now it’s time for me to say, let’s get on with the show, I’d like to thank our hosts for the evening, and hope this event will grow

A huge thank you to the volunteers who have been along to our first social clubs so far, it’s been fabulous seeing people chatting, giggling and sharing stories and we’re really lucky to have such a lovely group helping us to welcome older neighbours to their first social clubs.

As the Manchester Cares network grows, develops and diversifies, now is a fantastic time to sign up to be a part of it all and to pledge to spend a little time hanging out with some brilliant people who ordinarily you may not get the chance to meet.

Stay posted on Twitter and Facebook to learn more and be part of it.
