Laura has been a Manchester Cares volunteer on the Love Your Neighbour programme for over a year and last week made the exciting transition from volunteer to staff member

Read about Laura’s first couple of weeks with us, what it’s been like starting a new job over webcam and why Manchester (and Manchester Cares) have such a special place in her heart.

My relationship with Manchester began when I was a kid. I grew up 18 miles north so visiting the city was such an exciting day out! I celebrated many milestones here in Manchester. My first gig (S Club 7 at the MEN), studying at University, and playing my first gig at a bar in Fallowfield. When I left to go working abroad in 2012 I never expected to be drawn back to a place so close to home five years later. Manchester welcomed me with open arms and our relationship has blossomed ever since. I am extremely proud to call Manchester my home.

I loved travelling and my favourite part (apart from the food) was meeting new people. What really struck me about exploring different places is that despite diversity in language, food, culture - community runs through the heart of every land. From small gatherings to big cities we are drawn to each other. We survive and thrive together and enjoy storytelling, laughter and friendship.

I signed up as a volunteer with Manchester Cares as the vision of the organisation stood out to me. Community, connection, friendship and laughter are so important. I was soon matched with my friend Prudence, 70, through the Love Your Neighbour programme. We instantly clicked and have been friends for over a year now! We love talking about plants, our favourite recipes, sharing jokes and painting our nails together. Read more about our friendship here. I am really looking forward to getting to know more neighbours and volunteers!

I joined Manchester Cares as Head of Programmes a couple of weeks ago. It feels like such such an interesting and historical time. Over the last weeks I have felt extremely proud at how everyone has adapted to strive to stay connected and keep in touch. I have been enjoying meeting neighbours through our Digital Social Clubs and phone calls. I cannot wait until we can get back together in person, but until then I know we will continue to stay connected.

As the Head of Programmes at Manchester Cares I oversee the programmes and support the team. Previously I worked managing the large scale youth and social integration programme National Citizen Service here in Manchester.
